Introducing Gimi's weekly calendar: Helping you to find a routine with everyday chores

June 3, 2020

Overflowing laundry baskets, meal planning and cooking, a flower bed full of weeds and a constant mountain of dishes in the sink. This is a common and probably very familiar daily routine of many families. And at Gimi, we understand that and we want to help ease the load. To help our community of parents we have made a super-smart weekly calendar to give you easy inspiration and a clear guide for what the children could help with and when!

With Gimi's calendar, the chores start to become routine, the children receive a financial education and you as a supporter get free tips for how to use Gimi in the best way possible. Read the entire blog or just add the calendar events. We will let you know what to do and when to do it, you can just sit back and relax!

By breaking down the week into days it is easier to focus and take one thing at a time. Instead of lining up all the household chores in a long list, we have split them day by day. Thanks to this weekly calendar you will hardly need to reflect on how to use Gimi in the best way, how to give your child financial education or how to create a peaceful collaboration in the family. You will realise the power of Gimi instantly!

If you are in a hurry you can simply add the following calendar events to your iCal or similar digital calendar, which will then remind you how and when to act. If you do have a little more time, make sure you read the entire blog to gain inspiration and an understanding of how easy it is to turn the “must” tasks into fun activities, something we know can be a challenge when it comes to children and chores!

We hope you find the blog useful and that you enjoy it!

Sunday

When a new week starts, it's all about getting to a good routine, which is why we will take some help from Sunday. Sunday is a perfect day of preparation that will make the rest of the week as painless and smooth as possible.

Let the kids take care of all the cans and all the garbage every two weeks. For children, it can be exciting to see how much money the recycling gives and learn how to sort at the recycling center. Cleaning and getting rid of things is a magical feeling, so take this opportunity and end the week with a clean home.

The Sunday evenings can sometimes give us all a little tingling feeling in the stomach as anticipation for the next working week begins. Try to break this pattern and instead spend the afternoon doing something fun! Now that you finally have time to cook a meal without being hungry or in a hurry to get to activities, you can then put the kids on project lasagna!

Let them follow a recipe and do all the steps in peace. When the lasagna is complete, you should hear and be amazed, not eat it. Instead, put it in the fridge and save it for tomorrow. You will thank yourself when you can start the week comfortably with good food prepared ahead of time.

Monday

Start the week with energy. Often, Monday can set the mark for the rest of the week, so just let this day flow. The lasagna is already cooked so you don't have to think about a dinner plan. Instead, use the evening to extend the weekend a bit, spend time together and play games.

At the same time, you can make the children feel grown-up and independent by inviting you to their dinner. Help them turn the oven on and put the lasagna in, then let them set the table and chop vegetable sticks. If they have friends over, they can do it together, just put on some good music and let them create a smiling face of cucumber, pepper and carrot on each plate, and then it’s time to dig in.

When the meal is eaten, there are just a few dishes, so if everyone takes care of their own plate, the children can easily be responsible for getting the rest of them into the machine.

Tuesday

Often we fall into the trap where we think everything should be done in the afternoon or evening. At the same time, we can all relate to the wonderful feeling of, for example, exercising in the morning and then having the whole day free with good conscience. The same goes for the children. Let them do some tasks right in the morning so they can do whatever they want when they get home from school.

As you prepare the breakfast, give the children a watering can and let them water all the flowers of the home, room by room. Just until the coffee is done, the house's plants are watered and the children have earned some extra money even before the day started. Lovely!

The positive thing about this task is that you won’t have to worry about the flowers drying out, now they get guaranteed water at least once a week. If you have a garden, maybe it's about letting the kids pull out the weeds in the flower bed every Tuesday morning instead.

Wednesday

After a really good start to the week, it can be nice to cool down a bit. Maintain routines such as having a clean room and setting your own plate in the dishwasher, but do not give the children any extra task today.

Thursday

A full laundry basket and a constantly running washing machine are standard for many families. The pile of both clean laundry and dirty laundry never seems to end. But taking care of the laundry doesn't have to be boring, so why not make it a competition!

Pour out all clean socks on the floor and find out who can pair most socks in the shortest time. Week by week maybe the kids can beat their records and you can make a leaderboard! Another alternative is to let the children look for all dirty laundry in the house. How much laundry can they find in 20 minutes?

This activity is perfect for the child to do by themselves, with siblings or with you as a parent.

Friday

Finally! The job week is over and the long-awaited taco night is waiting! Make this a cozy event for the whole family. Divide yourselves into food teams where someone is responsible for making the coolest table setting ever (yes, toys and balloons are allowed to sit on the table), another member of the family is to chop vegetables in a new, neat way and a third to fry the protein like a chef with a hat, apron and a towel thrown over the shoulder.

See this as an opportunity to hang out, play and have fun. Being able to use a costume, props and have some Mexican music in the background can do the trick. Remember to take photos, it's fun to look back on all the variants of Friday nights you've had. Of course, if the kids have friends over, they can also take a seat in some of the cooking, it's just fun!

After dinner everyone takes responsibility for doing fine at their food station and the kitchen is quickly fine again.

Saturday

When the weekend starts, both children and adults are often eager to run away with all the fun. Therefore, tear off all the "must" do activities and chores immediately.

As you sit at the breakfast table, let the tablet go around the team where everyone has 5 minutes to find a dish they want to eat next week. Tacos and lasagna are already booked, which means that only 5 new dishes are needed. Let the children write down all the ingredients required for the different dishes and create a shopping list straight away.

After breakfast, go straight to the grocery store and start to tick off the shopping list. Send the kids on a mission to pick up one item at a time and ask them what each item costs. At the checkout you all have to guess what you think the whole big purchase cost, the one who guesses the correct amount gets an ice cream.

By exposing children to prices in this way, an understanding around the value of money will begin to emerge. So you are giving them a financial education without really knowing it.

The grocery shopping is also a perfect opportunity for the children to buy their Saturday candy with their Gimi card. If you are curious about the Gimi card, have a look here: About the Gimi card
